Signs Your TRT Dose Is Too High or Too Low

How to tell whether your dose needs adjusting — and why labs, not just how you feel, drive that decision.

Feeling off on TRT does not always mean the dose is wrong, but it can. The challenge is that symptoms alone are not reliable — which is why labs drive dose adjustments, not just how you feel.

Signs your dose may be too low include persistent fatigue, low libido, and poor recovery that do not improve after the first few months. Signs it may be too high include acne, mood swings, fluid retention, and elevated hematocrit on labs. Some of these overlap with starting symptoms, which is why follow-up bloodwork matters.

Your provider checks your levels at follow-up — typically within the first few months, then periodically — and titrates the dose based on both your labs and how you are actually feeling. Never adjust your dose on your own. See our TRT timeline page for what changes and when.
