Testosterone therapy can accelerate pattern hair loss — but only in men already genetically predisposed. Here is how to think about it.

This is one of the most-searched TRT questions, and the honest answer is more nuanced than a yes or no. Testosterone therapy can accelerate androgenic (pattern) hair loss in men who are genetically predisposed to it. It does not cause hair loss in men who are not.
Pattern hair loss is driven by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone testosterone converts to. Raising your testosterone can raise DHT, which can speed up a process that was already going to happen in susceptible men. If you are not predisposed, TRT does not start it.
If hair loss is a concern for you, raise it with your provider. It is one of the factors weighed when building your protocol, and it is a reasonable thing to factor into your decision. See our TRT side effects page for the full picture of what gets monitored.
